Words for Worship – Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

”Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” — Margaret Wolfe Hungerford

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – As an artist, I’ve certainly learned this to be true.  What one person views as a masterpiece can be an atrocity in the eyes of another.  Today’s society certainly has an opinion on what beauty is and what it is not.  And the focus is overwhelmingly placed on outward appearance.  The problem is, in many cases, the beauty we see on the outside does not reflect what is on the inside.

In fact, when we place such a fierce emphasis on outward beauty, it may signal that we are hiding something not so beautiful inside.

Like a painting after awhile, the vibrancy of the pigments tends to fade and we rely on our initial impression, (our vision of what the image looked like before), for the true beauty that attracted our eye in the first place.  At that point, we can honestly say that the beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  The Bible tells us,

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.  The Lord does not look at the things people look at.  People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” —1 Samuel 16:7 NIV

Isn’t it far better to direct our efforts on beauty that doesn’t fade, but is only enhanced by the flaws of life?  Indeed, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  When God looks upon us, the beauty of an obedient heart is a work of art whose value is priceless.  To him, it is a treasure worth dying for.

Peace and love,

Felecia

On Limits

On Limits

on limitsA Quote to Carry You

March 2, 2015

“Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.”  Albert Einstein

On Limits…It seems to me that there is an innate part of human nature that causes us to push our limits and go beyond any boundaries that seem to confine us.  Creatively speaking, that is an essential attribute to have.  That is what motivates an artist to hone his skills and develop a style all his own.  It is the driving forces that causes a musician to play her instrument in a way that produces the purest sound, to create the most exquisite music.  I shudder to think how dull the world would seem if we never pushed our personal limits…can you imagine?

What are some of your personal limits?  Are you willing to go beyond their boundaries and see how you can color our world?  How will you share your unique vision and distinguishable voice?

Peace and love,

Felecia

A Bit of Myself

A Bit of Myself

A Bit of Myself…sharing the secrets of my soul.

I must admit that I have had a bit of a difficult time getting my thoughts down on paper for this post.  I knew what I wanted to say, but I just couldn’t seem to formulate the words. Thinking back on things that’d read or seen that would perhaps inspire me, I came across this excerpt from the classic story “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde:

Basil Hallward:  “every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not the sitter.  The sitter is merely the accident, the occasion.  It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the colored canvas, reveals himself.  The reason I will not exhibit this picture is that I am afraid that I have shown in it the secret of my own soul.”

When I first read this passage, I must say that I had to reread it a couple of times and sort of catch my breath. Continue reading

For the Eye of the Beholder

for the eye of the beholder

“Sparkle,” graphite pencil drawing, Felecia R. Weber, OntheWingofaDove.com

Art is what you make it…

An artist sees the world as a blank canvas; he interprets it in his own way.  It becomes a new creation, a gift waiting to be opened and enjoyed by all who gaze upon it.

For the Eye of the Beholder

Beautiful, lovely, gorgeous,

Sensual, attractive, appealing,

Dark, deep, solemn,

Wild, lively, vibrant,

A shape, a mood, a feeling,

An object, cold and abstract,

Something heartwarming and desirable, Continue reading
