What Does That Mean For Me? – There are many types of friendships spanning from platonic to romantic, but there is one thing that they all have in common.

”A friend loveth at all times.” —Proverbs 17:17

What Does That Mean For Me?

What does it mean to love you?  What does that mean for me?

You know I’d do anything for you…but what does that mean for me?

Even when you make me angry; even when you make me cry;

I know you never really mean to hurt me…but what does that mean for me?

Thoughts of you consume me, even when you are not there.

No matter the distance between us; you know I’ll always care.

Nothing can separate us because our lives have already crossed…

You are a part of me forever…but what does that mean for me?

What does that mean for me? – It’s a strange question that can be asked of many things.  In this context, I’d like to speak about relationships, specifically friendships.

There are many types of friendships spanning from platonic to romantic, but there is one thing that they all have in common.  All relationships require each party to give of themselves to the other.  I love how this concept is so beautifully illustrated in the interaction between the fox and the little prince in Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince:

(The fox speaking to the little prince):

”’Please-tame me!’ he said.

‘What must I do to tame you?’ asked the little prince.

’You must be very patient,’ replied the fox.  ‘First you will sit down at a little distance from me-like that- in the grass.  I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing.  Words are the source of misunderstandings.  But you will sit a little closer to me, every day…’”

What does that mean for me?  I believe to be a friend to someone, one must become familiar with that person…their strengths, their vulnerabilities, their habits…everything about them.  This is done mostly by quiet observation, remember, actions speak louder than words.  Throughout this process, one must also give of themselves, by sharing the same with the other person.  It sounds like an arduous task, that is hardly worth the effort…but there is more…

(Again, the fox speaking to the little prince):

”You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.”

Once a friendship is cultivated, it can never be undone really; if it is a true friendship.

Merriam-Webster defines a friend as “one attached to another by affection or esteem.”  Being attached or associated with someone for any length of time does create a history between the two.  And that time cannot be erased, neither the good nor the bad.  The bond of a true friendship is a powerful thing which can and will withstand anything…

(More wise words from the fox to the little prince):

”One runs the risk of weeping a little, if one lets oneself be tamed…”

Just as challenges arise in our individual lives, obstacles threaten to undo friendships.  Emotions tend to play a huge part in this aspect of a relationship…because true friends affect our hearts.  And it is within our hearts that our true selves reside…

(Again, the fox speaking to the little prince):

“But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you.”

Being attached to another, a true friend becomes a part of ourselves.  Our door is always open to them, and we greet them with open arms.  There is no distance, (spatially or emotionally), that is out of reach for the bond that seals the hearts of true friends.

Friendship…what does it mean for you?

Peace and love,

You and Me, We Will Always Be

You and Me, We Will Always Be

You and me, we will always be…even those times when we’re apart…because we’re connected heart to heart.

“The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for man to be alone…'” Genesis 2:18

This Bible verse solidifies exactly how I feel about sharing my life with others…and that is good! When I spend time with someone I love and care about, it is as if that period of time transcends everything else in the world.  Being in a close relationship, be it platonic or romantic, has a way of connecting one person to another.  Whether they are physically together or apart; it is a bond that is inseparable no matter what.

You and Me, We Will Always Be

You and me, we will always be,

even those times when we’re apart.

The miles between us do not matter at all,

because we’re connected heart to heart.

You and me, we will always be,

you are my buddy, my pal, my friend.

I am here when you need me, and when you don’t;

I’ll be with you from the beginning to the end.

You and me, we will always be,

I can’t imagine ever being without you.

We’ve seen each other through thick and thin;

indeed, I am your comrade through and through.

It’s All In the Family

It's All in the Family

Study for “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (Detail), 1884, George Seurat. Image from a page of the 2013 Desk Calendar, courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store

It’s all in the family…they say that blood is thicker than water, and when it comes to love, it’s all in the family.

“The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing.” (author unknown)

It’s all in the family…love that is!  Have you ever thought of where love comes from?  Can you remember the first time that you’ve ever experienced the warm and cozy feeling that only genuine love can produce?  For me, I can honestly say that my very first acquaintance with true love was made right amongst my own family.  When I am with my family, it seems like I am oblivious to the outside world.  I suppose the best way that I can describe how I feel when I am surrounded by my loved ones, is like snuggling up inside a big fuzzy blanket…it’s one of the best feelings in the world!

The love that exudes from a family creates a bond between its members that can never truly be broken…we are always connected.  Whether you get to be with your family frequently or if time and distance only allows for visits few and far between, the love that flows from your hearts seals any gaps and brings you together with your loved ones on a different level.  The good times and the bad times, the memories that have been made and played out by each member of the family during times spent together are woven tightly…hmmm, like the fabric of that fuzzy blanket I’ve mentioned earlier.

Living together, caring for and sharing with each other, being there through thick and thin, these are all significant forms of affection that portray the depth of the kind of love a family experiences and understands.  They are not carried out by force or by burdensome effort.  Rather, they just happen within the family…it is family love in action.

I realize that not everyone has had the opportunity to build upon and experience the genuine, coveted love that flows freely to link and keep a family together.  But I challenge those who have, to try spreading some of their own special bonding love to those around you.

It’s all in the family…love that is;

It’s a bond that’s genuine and true.

It is my hope that all may experience it…

And may the blanket called”family” always cover you.

Peace and love,

Felecia
